The Dance Emporium, now in its 21st year providing quality dance training and experience to young people throughout Orange County and the surrounding area, has announced that August 12 through 23 from 9:00 to 3:00 (Monday through Friday) they will hold their first Summer Performance Camp expanding their training to acting and singing along with dance, for children and teens aged 8 through 16. The two week camp will culminate with a performance on Friday, August 23 at 4:00 at Middletown High School.

The camp will provide a full musical experience for the participants, creating an original review around their talents while challenging them in new areas. Singing classes, both group and solo, along with acting classes, will be added to The Dance Emporium’s award winning dance training for an intensive, but fun, camp. This ear the camp’s theme is “Hooray for Hollywood!” and will draw from movies that showcased song and dance from the 1930’s to the present day.

Joining Nancy Green and her dance faculty and staff will be Cabot Parsons, a theater director with over 35 years experience directing, writing and teaching, most recently at SUNY Orange as guest artist and instructor. Ms. Green and Mr. Parsons met while working together at a camp for the underserved community in Newburgh. Music direction and vocal instruction will be provided by Colin Rose, an accomplished teacher and pianist in the Hudson Valley who also serves as part of the music staff at SUNY Purchase.

“We’re very excited to bring this unique opportunity to Middletown,” says Ms. Green. “We’ve had students from The Dance Emporium come to our camp in Newburgh and be delighted at the opportunities and level of expanded instruction we provided there, so to bring this experience home to our studio is very satisfying.”

Mr. Parsons developed the original method of camp structure that gives each child the chance to shine. “We bring in a wealth of potential material around the theme on the first day, and the first few sessions are general teaching and assessment, so that we can evaluate each performer and give them personalized attention built around their unique abilities and experience level. In addition, we look for ways to challenge them and push them outside their comfort zone a little bit. Every child matters, and every child has an experience tailored to them and showcasing them. By writing the piece during camp and selecting songs as we go, we give each and every camper their moment during the showcase. Other area camps may do a watered down production of an existing musical, but that generally means that two or three kids get key roles and all the rest are relegated to chorus. At our camp, we make every kid the star.”

The cost for the camp is $440 with discounts for multiple kids and for early registration, by June 15. All sessions will be held at The Dance Emporium studios at 80 Irwin Avenue in Middletown. For more information contact The Dance Emporium at 845-344-1144 or online at thedanceemporium.com.
