Gloria Vanderbilt Whitney and Friends- Instructor: Laura Nicholls
Gloria Vanderbilt Whitney; an award-winning American sculptress, art patron, socialite and founder of NYC’s Whitney Museum of American Art, was born into, and married into, families of America’s great fortunes. In 1907, after opening a studio in Greenwich Village, Whitney came into contact with progressive American painters and began a long, fruitful, and supportive relationship with them. She eventually opened the Whitney Studio Club and Gallery, allowing budding American modern artists opportunities previously not afforded to them. In 1930 the Whitney Museum of American Art was founded, and the rest is history! Please join us as we take a look into the life and creative output of GV Whitney herself, as well as several prominent early-modern American artists whose names we recognize today…including Robert Henri, Reginald Marsh, Edward Hopper and Stuart David.
