Music For A Summer Evening

On July 11th Safe Harbors of the Hudson will present “Music for a Summer’s Evening”, a live performance by the contemporary chamber ensemble ‘X Ensemble’. The program will feature the recently premiered “Convergence: Series A” by composer & pianist Neil Alexander and includes other pieces from their repertoire of original and classical compositions. This will be a free outdoor evening concert on Safe Harbors Green, located at the intersection of Broadway and Liberty, in Newburgh NY. The music will begin at 5:30 pm. Concertgoers should bring chairs and/or a picnic blanket, and are encouraged to call The Wherehouse at 845-561-4720 to place an order for a delicious boxed picnic supper to enjoy this summer’s evening concert in the park. In case of rain the concert will be rescheduled for Sunday July 18th.
“Convergence: Series A” is the first of a new series of works featuring a multi-faceted approach to composition and instrumentation, with new technologies and styles alongside and closely integrated with traditional ones. The piece is scored for 3 strings, 2 winds, 2 percussionists, piano & electronics. The concert will also feature additional works by the composer including “Cumberland Spring” and “In The Kitchen” (2002), originally composed for jazz quartet), and their arrangement of the 2nd movement from Beethoven’s Piano Concerto #5 (the “Emperor”). For this performance the group includes 3 strings, 2 winds, keyboards and 2 percussionists. The musicians for this performance are:
Fung Chern Hwei (Violin); Daniel Blair-Frankhuizen (Cello); Peter Brendler (Contrabass); Brad Hubbard (Baritone Saxophone, Flute, Bass Clarinet); Steven Frieder (Alto Saxophone, Clarinet); Todd Isler (drum set, hand percussion); Angel Michael Lau (percussion) and Neil Alexander (Piano, loops, Synthesizers).
The X Ensemble is a contemporary chamber ensemble performing works of living composers as well as arrangements of classic orchestral and chamber music works. Their unique approach is based on a strong foundation in traditional styles that allows them to explore new and diverse musical landscapes, and includes, baroque, romantic, minimalist jazz and electronic styles. The ensemble is directed by composer, pianist and synthesist Neil Alexander, and regularly features Neil’s compositions and arrangements. Their debut performance took place on October 15th, 2016, at The Ritz Theater in Newburgh NY to a sold out crowd.
