  • Jean-Marc Superville Sovak is a multidisciplinary artist and teaching professional whose work deeply involves his life and the community around him. His current project, "a-Historical Landscapes", involves altering 19th century landscape engravings to include contemporaneous images borrowed from Anti-Slavery publications. Jean-Marc's work has been included in the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art's Permanent Collection, and has been exhibited at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Socrates Sculpture Park and Manifesta 8 Biennial in Murcia, Spain. This 1839 engraving by William Bartlett depicts the city of Albany which, since the completion of the Erie Canal in 1825, had become a major industrial center. The image of the African-American children printed by the artist on the original engraving, is a reminder that Albany was also a major stop on the Underground Railroad for those fleeing enslavement northward on their way to freedom. All prints are unique works of art signed by the artist. The image superimposed by the artist is taken from abolitionist John G. Whittier's "A Sabbath Scene" from 1854 which criticized in verse the hypocrisy of a church minister complicit in the arrest of a fugitive slave. All prints are unique works of art signed by the artist.
